Subcommittee addresses traffic safety, shortens winter parking ban

City Council · Meeting of February 2, 2026

NH LACONIA — Laconia Public Works Subcommittee approves shortened parking ban and addresses traffic safety. The committee voted unanimously to change the winter parking ban from November 1 through May 1 to November 15 through April 15, replacing seasonal restrictions with an emergency-based system allowing police discretion. The committee directed City Manager Kirk Beattie to fund a traffic study at Old Prescott Hill Road and Belmont Road, a long-disputed intersection where Briarcrest residents have sought for years to reverse a decades-old change that eliminated left turns from their neighborhood.

The committee recommended Clay Street become a one-way street from Bowman to Fair, citing narrow width and emergency access concerns, while residents raised multiple speeding complaints on Shore Drive, Holman Street, and Linwood Road requesting speed-reduction measures.
