Heritage Commission explores neighborhood heritage districts for Laconia

NH LACONIA — Laconia Heritage Commission moves forward with neighborhood heritage districts to preserve historic character. Chair Marjory Wilkinson led the commission through the framework for these preservation tools, which are more flexible than historic districts. Wilkinson noted Stratham established New Hampshire's first such district in 2022 and outlined potential goals including controlling demolitions, preserving affordable housing and preventing overdevelopment.
The commission discussed White Oaks Road as a primary candidate, consulting with residents including Bruce Pardo and Planning Director Rob Mora. Public comment from residents Alicia Emery and Frances Ray emphasized traffic and development concerns on White Oaks Road. The commission plans to request City Council funding for Master Plan zoning work and will support an educational forum on June 30 at the Laconia Public Library.
